I will be in Washington, D.C. this weekend! Hooray! I'll be free Saturday, but I probably won't get there until late Friday and will be leaving early Sunday. martinivixen and I will be staying at the casa de fizzbang and drspooky. So, tell me you want to hang or you get no love.

On a complete aside, does anyone watch The Riches other than me? Cause it's a good show.

"The Loop" was not a very good show, but it did have one shining thing in it that was worth saving - the character "Derek", the guy who is always in the elevator. It's unnecessary to set these clips up, which is what makes Derek so wonderful as a comedic character:

It's kind of sad. Derek only works in small doses, so he couldn't have his own show. But couched in a sub-prime show like "The Loop", he is destined to be canceled. Derek belongs in commercials or shorts. (It just so happens the actor is in those "Need a Moment" Twix commercials, but not really playing Derek, sadly. He apparently also hosts the in-store EB show.)

OMG CONTENT WARNING - POLITICS: Does anyone believe that the Democratic Party could continue to exist if the nominee was not the person leading the delegate count at the end of the state primary and caucus procedure? (Note that before the changes of 1982, this person would have won the nomination without any support from previously non-existent superdelegates.)

The whole "superdelegate" thing was introduced to give party leaders more power, but if they use that power to override the party's rank and file (and in many cases, the people who elected them to their own offices), does anyone believe the Democrat's hoi polloi would put up with this sort of oligarchical kingmaking?

As I said yesterday, I'm not really a Democrat. I'm just really curious if people think an organization with "democratic" in the title could continue onward once they abandoned democracy for kleptocracy.

Being Good at Being Stupid Doesn't Count!

The essential problem with trolling is that being good at being stupid isn't really an accomplishment.

At any rate, today I'll be voting in the Pennsylvania primaries for the first time ever. I'm not really a Democrat (I'm not a partisan-type person), but the paperwork says that I is.

OMG TOPIC WARNING - RELIGION: This weekend, I talked to friends about my thought experiment, "What kind of god allows bad things to happen to good people?" The answers I see are thus:

1.) A malignant god. "Screw good people."
2.) An indifferent god. "Ehn."
3.) An inscrutable god. "I work in mysterious ways."

Inevitably, sensible theists of all varieties resort to Option 3. But a god who is inscrutable in his morality or sense of justice is a useless god. After all, morality and justice do not come from any gods (and anyone who intends to argue this point had better prepare to denounce pre-Mosaic laws). As relaxatorium and I discussed, it then goes back to Euthyphro: "Is the pious loved by the gods because it is pious? Or is it pious because it is loved by the gods?" What is right is right - people knew that murder was wrong before the Ten Commandments.

Moreover, if we further explore Possibilities #1 and #2, we can ask, "If god has no morality, what is right?" Is murder acceptable when god doesn't care? Is murder acceptable when god does it himself (for instance, if YHWH uses bears to kill kids [2 Kings 2]) or is murder always wrong? If you murder someone who god was about to murder, is it wrong or right?

Furthermore, if justice on earth is desirable (if we humans are supposed to behave in a pursuit of justice), why is there no divine evidence of this? With respect specifically to Christianity, if justice on earth is desirable, why is the ultimate quality of divine judgment one of belief and not one of earthly behavior?

I tend to say I'm not a firm disbeliever nor a firm believer in anything, but I am, realistically, a gut-check atheist. When it comes right down to it... yeah, I just can't believe in or care about a "divine" being.

This is the stuff I think about when I'm bored. And I vote.

I'll be at the KGB Stuff this weekend, for people going to that. I'll hop around Midway for Carnival, but the comedian and band don't interest me, so nyeah to that.

In LULZ News, Ben Stein has participated in a "documentary" about the "persecution" of Intelligent Design. There's a trailer on YouTube, which is turtlelulz.

People who do not understand science and readily discuss science are the equivalent of people who do not watch "Lost" but are ready to talk about it. There are bound to be some very important yet very basic elements that they are completely ignorant of.

In other words, Ben Stein should stick to writing speeches for lame presidents and/or answering trivia questions on television.

Oh yeah. And 4th Edition is just 50 days away... nom nom nom! The day after release, June 7th, is National D&D Game Day or what-have-you, so I guess I will have to host some D&D action that day. Reserve your spot today!

OMG OBAMA

So, Barack Obama spoke at Soldiers & Sailors Hall in Pittsburgh today. That's two buildings down from me, so it was pretty close. Tickets went fast so I decided to skip it. Still, my coworkers and I went to lunch, passing the hall on the way there. They were broadcasting the speech over loudspeakers outside the hall, so I heard just a tiny snippet.

My coworkers and I decided to stop and take some pictures "with" Obama:

We went and had lunch, and when we returned, there were folks waiting outside the back of the hall, so we figured Obama was coming out soon. So we waited. And waited. After a half hour, I spotted Franco Harris, an Obama supporter. As a huge Steelers fan, I got really excited and took a crappy picture of him. He handed out blue "Terrible Towels" of a sort, with the slogan "Here we go, America, here we go." I ran down to him, and then Franco Harris gave me an Obama Terrible Towel!

I wish I'd gotten a photo of him with me, but I didn't. My cameraphone sucks anyway, so no big loss.

Finally, after an hour of waiting, Obama appeared! I saw him for 20 seconds, and he appeared to me to be 2 inches tall. I took pictures of him!

So... the denouement of our long stand in the cold was utterly unimpressive, but hey, I got an Obama Terrible Towel, so that absolutely rules.

It was kind of one of those surreal moments when various aspects of my life crash together into an awesome situation. Work, politics and sports all collided to bring me this one item which represents my past, present and possibly my future. Wild.

Sadly, there are no tracks on this album (The Odd Couple) that grab me like "Crazy" or "Who Cares?" or "Transformer" did from St. Elsewhere. "Surprise" is probably the one that I'll really take away from this album. I wish there were a few more, though.

It's absolutely a fine and dandy album - I just very much look for "hooks" in music that pull me in and keep me, and I think "Surprise" would be the only track to do it. After St. Elsewhere, I was hoping for more.

Chuck's Unrelated Fun Fact of the Day: There are actually (at least) three popes, the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church (the one we are usually familiar with), the Pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria and the Pope of the Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria. There are probably a bunch more I'm mostly unfamiliar with spread around the Eastern Orthodox Church, too. But seriously - three popes!

I completed Viva Caligula, a Flash game on the Adult Swim site. It's good times. You are Caligula, and you run around killing Romans with 26 different weapons - one for each letter of the alphabet! At the end there's an orgy, which is about as exciting and PG-13 rated as you'd expect!

I've played most of Amateur Surgeon, and I beat what turned out to be an awesome puzzle game, Head Games, starring Carl and Meatwad. Fun times.

Of the other games, the golf game ("Fairway to Hell") and "5 Minutes to Kill Yourself" are a bit ehn. Floor It, a Squidbillies game, is pretty fun and has funny Squidbillies quotes.

The new 2.4 patch for World of Warcraft came out yesterday. I spent last night in Magister's Terrace, which is pretty difficult. We downed two bosses, then it was late so we went to bed. I got a nifty tanking ring for my druid.

Games, games, games... that's about all I have to present to you. Maybe as Spring comes on and Summer follows, I'll get more motivated to present my creative projects. Right now, I feel pretty ehn about them.

Why I'm Voting for Barack Obama

Because you care, I'm telling you why I'm voting for Barack Obama. You can tell me not to in the comments, or call me a hippie fag, and that might sway me, so discussion is always welcome.

I'm voting for Barack Obama because I'm a cynic. I don't actually believe most presidents are capable of vastly changing the U.S. or making it better. I do believe most presidents are capable of making it much worse. I do believe that presidents dictate the national "discussion" as it were.

As I noted elsewhere today, GWB changed the national conversation to "Religion: Can You Really Have Enough of It?" I'm sick of that conversation. It's not productive and it is distracting. If Barack Obama's speech about race issues is an indicator, then the national conversation under Barack Obama could be far more productive.

I'm voting for Barack Obama because he understands racial tension. One remarkable thing I got from Obama's Big Race Speech (tm) was how well he understood white resentment as much as black resentment. I grew up in poor America, and poor white people are resentful of ideas like Affirmative Action because being white has never given them the entitlement they supposedly have. They never got their "White People Club" entitlement checks, they never got their "White People Club" educations, and they're kinda pissed that their own suffering as working poor is never really acknowledged. Understanding that is vital to understanding our national racial tension.

Barack Obama also understands the "immigrant experience" that my own family went through, moving here from various European nations (as well as one Middle Eastern nation), working on farms, in factories, in the military, in coal mines, in steel mills, et cetera.

I'm voting for Barack Obama because he is not the other candidates. That might not sound like a great reason, but hear me out. I am essentially displeased with the politics of the U.S. since, say, the early 80s. It started with things like the "porn rock" hearings, it goes on to "violent video games" as politics, to things like "flag burning" and "patriotism" and "same-sex marriages". If you get one thing from this post, get this - Patriotism is not a political issue. Fuck patriotism. Joe McCarthy was a patriot, and how did that affect his values?

Hillary issue fought for flag-burning amendments, she gave lip service against video games, and that stuff irritated me. Then she put a commercial on TV that was predicated on the idea that Barack Obama wouldn't know how to answer a phone call in the middle of the night. With that, she lost me. When she started her campaign of "Presidents don't just give speeches; I have tons of experience", she started to piss me off. Sure, experience can create wisdom. It can also create bitterness. It can also create ignorance. Moreover, what experience does she have? How does Senate prepare you for President? How does First Lady prepare you? She doesn't address these issues directly - rather, she repeats phrases about experience.

Barack Obama has little experience. In my mind, I like the idea of a fresh mind having a crack at the White House. That's pure fantasy, of course, and it doesn't speak to any good reason to elect him. Certainly, he admits his campaign is flawed, which is a nice thing to hear from a candidate as well. Mitt Romney can't even admit there's a flaw in our country, which I find chilling.

On the other side, John McCain, for years, seemed like the reasonable arm of the Republican Party. He seemed like the Republican that socially liberal moderates could almost get behind. He never really was that guy, but he's gone way off the deep end since then. He spent this week drumming up the idea of war with Iran, which just plain makes my brain hurt. He's a veteran, which is a huge boost for him in my book, but somehow he seems to be hawking it up now, which is more brain-hurting. He hasn't said Word One about cutting spending and withdrawing troops, so he's basically promising the same policies we have now. I have no reason to consider supporting him as a result.

Again, I'm a cynic, so I don't really believe any of these candidates will do what they say they will do. Bush was a "uniter, not a divider" and was against nation-building. Whoops. So, I consider briefly who can do the least harm in office. As the least-connected of the candidates, Barack Obama is potentially he who will do the least harm. It also depends on who he chooses as a running mate - if it's an ex-employee of Haliburton, I will not be voting for him.

I'm voting for Barack Obama because he is a member of the Democratic Party that I wish existed. We mostly inherit our political parties. My immediate family are independents that consistently vote Democrat. I've voted Green a few times in local elections. I'd consider voting Republican if they were the party they're supposed to be and not the party of Corporate Jesus.

Barack Obama, like John Edwards, talks about the social issues I care about. I'm not poor these days, but I grew up in a family that was "working poor." My mother had to take a job when I was very young, and so both of my parents worked for most of my life just to give me the opportunities that every teenager should have. I want to help the kids growing up the way I grew up. I don't want any family to be under the poverty line.

Barack Obama chides black, Christian audiences for resenting homosexuals. That's a strong position to take. Barack Obama talks about how we, as a society, need to talk about racism. Barack Obama talks relentlessly about poverty, about corporate corruption and lobbyists. Maybe he won't do anything about them, but I like that he talks about them. I have to judge him by his actions, which are few at this point, but those actions are desirable to me.

The Democratic Party has become a shadow of the Republican Party more and more, falling for the same traps of "patriotism" and "freedom" and "homeland security" that are against the fabric of what I believe in. If the Democratic Party were anything, I wish it were the party of social justice. In small doses, it is. On local levels, it can be. As a national political party, it is not.

I find that very sad, because that means there is no Party of Social Justice, just two parties that promise to cut taxes and end up spending my money on the military and invading other countries. I'd prefer the National Guard invade this country and repair the roads and bridges, create real career opportunities and guard our borders so that American job stop getting out.

I'm voting for Barack Obama because I get to vote on whatever criteria I choose. Republics are really interesting because we don't vote on issues, we vote on representatives. And we can vote on those representatives based on whatever bullshit we want.

You can vote for Clinton because she's a woman. You can vote for Obama because he's black. You can vote for McCain because he's old. You can vote for Clinton because Obama is black. You can vote for McCain because his last name has six letters. No one can criticize your reasons for voting because there's not even a set of guidelines on why you vote for any given candidate. You can make up whatever criteria you want.

So, by my criteria, Barack Obama wins. It's useless to try and convince you because you have your own criteria, but I encourage you to vote for Obama, even if it's an uninformed choice. Why? Because your vote can be cast based on the criteria you want, including, "Because Chuck likes that guy." And I think that's a good criteria.

Anyway, that's why I'm voting for Obama. Also, Obamagirl is pretty hot, but I didn't see her until after I decided to vote for Obama, so I don't consider that amongst my criteria. Besides, martinivixen is pro-Obama, so she can be my Obamagirl anyway.

Lenlow is back! Well, that is, he's put out a new song this month, which he hadn't done in a few months. If you're not familiar with Lenlow's mashups, then I recommend Last Night, To the Taxmobile!, Get Eastwood and My Shiny Gun Mosey (all direct links to mp3s). His latest mashup, Cyprestition is similarly awesome (but I am a huge sucker for Cypress Hill mashups). I love Lenlow because his stuff doesn't sound overproduced or "Club Mix" in nature (not that I don't like some of that style of mashup, too). When I listen to his mashups, to me, they sound like original creations, which I really like.

How Life Goes: It goes fine. I play video games. Lately - Mass Effect, Super Smash Brothers Brawl (I'll post my friend code tonight, if I remember) and my old standby, World of Warcraft. I now have three 70s on Argent Dawn (Bhaala, Utga, Stormcrow). It's ridiculous, right? But I love leveling, and I stopped raiding many months ago, and they made leveling easier, so... it kind of follows. I do wish I could do more Heroics and 5-mans - I should just start PUGing. And when Argent Dawn was dying a few weeks ago, I finally got my first 70, Balthezar, the coveted hammer Earthwarden, which was satisfying. I had wanted that hammer since BC was released, and I finally just ground out the cash to buy my way through Exalted.

In tabletop, I'm playing a Warforged Crusader (named Vet) in an Expedition to Castle Ravenloft game (that's all Dungeons & Dragons speak for the unitiated). Crusader (from the Book of Nine Swords) is, in some ways, a preview of 4th Edition Paladin. I'm naturally incredibly excited about D&D 4th Edition, and I've followed every tidbit of information that has been released. I think this next edition is going to make the game incredibly accessible, which is only good news for D&D fans worldwide.

I've been working on my writing off and on, both on Dr. Pou and Does Your Dog Bite and some essays which may lay the foundation for a new Master Ninja - we'll see. Being creative is nicer than being productive sometimes, so hacking away at stories becomes more important than finishing them... screwy, ain't it?

Anyway, that's it from my delightful world of fantasy. In the real world, I registered to vote Democrat in Pennsylvania... guess who I'm voting for! Go ahead and try!

Providin' the Content, Fightin' the Butthurt

I, for one, did not know nor care that there was a LiveJournal Content Strike going. If you want to read a completely unbiased explanation of the strike, might I suggest the Encyclopedia Dramatica entry about it.

There is a strike because:
   1) The new Russian owners of LJ got rid of new Basic accounts. Basic accounts still exist, but no new ones can be created.
   2) Some interests disappeared for a whole day or two from the top interests page, and since the interests that disappeared included "sex", "fanfiction" and "faeries", it was obviously a corporate conspiracy (despite the fact that "alcohol", "death", "slash" and "blood" remained on the list).
   3) Butthurt people gots ta get their groove on.

So, Anton Nosik, the new LJ boss-man, doesn't express his feelings about LJ's Teeming Masses as if he's Mr. Rogers. The LJ Cultists continually repeat that LJ is content driven, so... I guess that means its their company. The Dotcom Days are over - in order to be profitable now, websites can't just milk venture capitalists. They have to sell product or sell ads. LiveJournal is no exception.

Anyway, I'm obviously not a member of the LiveJournal Posters Local 204, so I'm not participating in the strike. I'm also not a very productive member of counterculture, so I don't quite have the time to participate in the Non-stop commenting suggested by others.

It's sad that the first content I post in many days is a piece of content to defy those who are refusing to post content, but such is the Life of Chuck. Also, the ED article is fairly lulz, so you should read it.

Myron Cope died today at the age of 79. It's somewhat sad, but the Myron Cope era ended when he retired from broadcasting, so in a way, I've already dealt with my grief. My grandpa always called Cope "Mushmouth" and we would listen to Steelers broadcasts all the time. I remember when he did commentaries on KDKA - "This is Myron Cope... on sports!"

It's because of Cope, I believe, that the tradition of muting the TV and turning up the radio during Steelers' games started. It's not the same since he retired, really.

If you have never heard the voice of Myron Cope, then I have something for you. It's a Myron Cope Squakbox, basically just a soundboard of some Myron Cope wavs I had laying around. Do yourself a favor and listen to it.

If there is an afterlife, and there's any sort of review or anything of the events of my life as a counterpart of said afterlife, I would like Myron Cope to do the color commentary.

My hatred of the Patriots non-withstanding, thank you New York Football Giants for making the SuperBowl not only watchable, but downright exciting. I was not a believer, just a distant hoper. You proved me wrong.

The "New" Year...

2008 is already 58 hours old, and this shit is played out. So far in the new year, someone stole our snow shovel and my so-called friends hung me out to dry for our first Dungeons & Dragons game of the year.

Seriously, though, 2007 is over. It was pretty boring, but I really prefer it that way. I got engaged and that's pretty much going to be the "big deal" about 2007 for the rest of my life. Other than that, I mostly played video games and pissed around. It was pretty cool.

I've got some stuff in the hopper for introduction in 2008. Chuck Werner Industries^TM is always ready to deliver the best products that Nonsense Engineering^TM can deliver. 2008 will probably end up a more productive year, and that means it'll be less relaxing. That will not be quite as cool.

The best life is a life unlived, I'd say. Observe much and interfere little... but in the end, I'm not truly capable of that level of ascetics. Instead, I'll just try and give you stuff to think about this year. I know I didn't really do that last year, and it's probably one of my rare talents. Or something.

Anyway, to all you Roman Consuls out there, enjoy your term! That is, after all, the original significance of January 1st...

Lookitmepostin! Three times in two days? Crazy.

I just wanted everyone to share in this joy (especially my WoW peeps out there). This happened about a month ago (Utga = mistergone, Maerika = xayber). It's the awesomest screenshot ever.

Oh yeah, I'm still playing World of Warcraft. Now that everyone I know (almost) plays Horde on Argent Dawn (join us!), the game is a shitload more fun. And it was fun to begin with. Hooray!

I was sick for most of Thanksgiving. I did get to play through Portal, which is very likely one of the best games I've played all year. It's short, but sweet, and it contains a funny, witty storyline with an ultimately satisfying closing song. Play it!

I think the best vajaytoo would be a the "slippery when wet" road sign.

Anyway, in other news, the creator of the Venture Bros, in his blog, noted that Season 3 would probably air in June, but casually followed by noting that, by then, they'd already be in production of Season 4. I have no idea if any Season 4 plans are actually confirmed, I just like the idea of four seasons of the Venture Bros. So that's a happy morning.
