 patch Originally uploaded by jcipa
I've had this patch for a very long time. For longer than I can recall-- It was already old when I came across it randomly in the house back in high school. I need to find a good place for it, preferably in a non-hipster way. flossie Originally uploaded by jcipaThis is the rainbow of embroidery floss currently inhabiting my sewing basket/box. Gee, is it obvious that my favorite colors are blue & green?
My internal clock is so messed up. I also discovered today that I already worked my last Sunday-- I'm working Friday instead of Sunday, and so on until the end of the summer. How bizarre. |

God In The Brain Current Mood: headache Current Music: Renovation of seventh floor (I'm on the eighth)I've had this article open in my browser for a long time while I've tried to figure out how to say what bugs me about it. I think there's two things: first, the nuns, given pretty persuasive evidence that their religious experience is in fact all in their head responding by retreating further into their belief, and second, the journalist not challenging them on it. |

top it off / clap and cough Well, I'm returning from the dead, or rather from a rather textbook upper respiratory infection. I spent the last week going through all the symptoms listed here, one at a time. It's day 7, and I can feel a marked improvement, so I have high hopes I'll continue to progress as expected and be "well" in a few days.
Meanwhile, I can catch up on a few things I was going to post about.
My younger son turned 7, and had a Star Wars themed party, where ( they made their own lightsabers )
katybeth was visiting for the weekend, and when the day after the party dawned warm and sunny, ( we took wheels out to the trails )
Then after that, this virus brutally attacked me, and brought me to my knees. But after a day of sleeping, I found that if I coked up on dayquil, I felt well enough to Do Something, albeit slowly, so I ( worked in my yard ) |

Current Music: muhsinah - discoveryso i've been at my job almost three months now.
i spent the first month or so catching up on the internet.
the second month was sort of maybe pretending to think about perhaps possibly starting a wee bit of work.
then i actually started doing some stuff, and really have been diving hardcore into shit the past few days.
friday morning, i am showing the COO, the CFO, the general counsel, and a few other people what i've been doing. this is the first actual work that they are going to see out of me. when i scheduled the meeting, i was like, meh, yeah, whatevs, i'll show you guys what i've been up to. and now i'm like, wow. this is kind of a big deal. i am going to BLOW THEIR MINDS with how awesome i am.
also when we were scheduling the meeting, my boss was like, "well, since you're not a morning person..." and gave me a look. yeah.....i should maybe start getting here on time. at some point. totally. i'm right on top of that, rose. |

Items Of Interest, 5/14 Oddly Awesome Thing of the Moment: These steampunk alphabet tiles, from alligator to zeppelin may be a little too expensive for you or I, but they'd be just the thing to decorate Baron von Hindeburg's Tessellated Aetheric Omnidome.
Awesome Thing of the Future: Vancouver is hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics, which is awesome enough, but the best part are their supercute cryptozoological mascots: Sumi the animal spirit (part orca, part thunderbird, part black bear), Miga the sea bear (part killer whale and part Kermode bear), and Quatchi the sasquatch (part sasquatch, and part elemental awesome).
Unsurprising and Awesome Thing of the Present: NARAL Pro-Choice America officially endorsed Barack Obama. According to the AP story, even though both Democratic candidates have excellent pro-choice records, they "decided to back Obama over Clinton because he is overwhelmingly favored to win the nomination and to heal what the organization viewed as a growing rift between black voters and white female activists that the protracted Clinton-Obama contest may have caused." Hooray for a restoration of party unity! |

The cool exec with a heart of steel Current Mood: nerdyMan, Iron Man was totally awesome. There were robot suits punching other robot suits, good acting and enough fanboy nods to give every Marvel zombie in the audience a nerd chubby. It even made the boring origin parts of the movie really interesting, replacing 'ponderous melodrama' with 'tinkering with my suit and being awesome'.
For sequels, I figure they could do the "Armor Wars" storyline or "Demon in the Bottle", maybe both. And of course, there's that bit at the end after the credits ... |

More on McCain Most of McCain's high level campaign staff are independent lobbyists. There was a call to fire two of them, as they'd previous taken hundreds of thousands of dollars to lobby for the military government of Myanmar province, formerly Burma. They were fired, as that's a bad thing.
Let's pick three more McCain campaign workers, as pointed out by http://www.firethelobbyists.com/ Keep in mind that McCain has 112 registered lobbyists on payroll in his campaign right now.
Thomas Loeffler, co-chairman of McCain's campaign. $8 million from Saudi Arabia was the largest amount of money collected from a foreign government for any lobbying firm that year. Seems that this is a regular amount since 2005, trying to get the Saudis into the WTO.
Peter Madigan, a leading McCain fundraiser, lobbies on behalf of the king of Dubai. He worked for the UAE to buffer against the class action lawsuit for enslaving boys used as camel jockeys.
And then we come to Charlie Black, McCain's senior counsel and spokesman. Ferdinand Marcos in the Philipines, Mobuto Seko in Zaire, Mohamed Barre in Somalia, Ibrahim Babangida in Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Jonas Savimbi in Angola, Iraqi National Congress, "Friends of Blackwater", and China National Off-Shore Oil Corporation. His firm is the go-to if the client's reputation is *awful*. He's also been tied to Reverent Sun Myung Moon, which ties back through to Kim Jong Il.
Again, keep in mind that McCain has 112 registered lobbyists on payroll in his campaign right now. These are not the folks "representing America". |

Ladies and gentlemen, my desperation knows no bounds.
I NEED COUCHES.
For whatever reason, be it the shitty economy, the persistently cool weather, or the couches themselves hiding in fear, I have been unable to locate a single dead couch on the sidewalk that stayed there long enough for me to come back with the camera. Since my entire documentary is kinda based on finding couches, I AM LIVING IN FEAR.
If you have seen a dead couch recently, please O please tell me where you saw it. If you have a dead couch, or a couch that does a decent impression of death, please tell me what I can bribe you with so I can schlep it out to the curb and then schlep it back. If you have ever put a couch out on the sidewalk, please say so, so I can interview at some time in the very near future that is convenient for you--also, I will make you cookies.
My plans for this weekend include a lot of driving, a lot of shooting, and a lot of cookie making.

More working out stuff. This one is a bit different than the others so far.
This one might get a bit deep. So. Live with me, will you? And I'm not looking for sympathy. Mike, at least, knows I do my best digging around in my head out on paper. Or in this case on a screen.
( Last night was the first workout with the trainer. ) |

つ鶴 i knew there was some problem when i saw that morino got taken out of the game halfway through but didn't know what.
then i came home, caught the sports news, and saw them CARRYING HIM OFF THE FIELD ON A STRETCHER.
i think i am way too emotionally involved in baseball when i'm almost thrown into shock after seeing my favorite player like that.
i mean, i'm all happy for masa yamamoto and all, 5 wins left to 200, but... all i can see in my mind of the game highlights is my dragonbutt getting hurt :(
勝ったけど森野選手しか考えない。 早く戻ってきて下さい!
that said, I'm not sure what to add about the last two days. Yesterday was Bobby Valentine's birthday, and his movie aired on ESPN in America. It's unclear when it'll be shown in Japan, but I may be able to get my hands on a copy of the DVD sometime soon. If any of you watched it, maybe it'll help make clear why I'm so crazy about the game here. I wrote a dorky poem about it on Marinerds. Last night I spent like 2-3 hours hacking Perl, working on my Japanese baseball boxscore parsing program. It's so satisfying to write code again. Sigh. I ate fast food yesterday for the first time in a while, KFC. My eating habits are really kinda getting bad/strange again and I should work on that. Today I had sushi for lunch, which was ok, but then I went to Daiso and replenished my mint Mentos stash. I've been chaining Mentos a lot lately and should stop. My two dangerous addictions right now are Mentos and UFO catchers. I really gotta cut down on both of them. Also, it's been cold and rainy the last few days, like around 15 degrees, so in the 50's for the Fahrenheit folks. Apparently that is unusually cold for this time of year -- and I'm sure in 2-3 weeks it's going to be HUMID ANNOYING HORRIBLE RAINY SEASON. |

Marini’s in Santa Cruz.
from here:
There’s no chocolate-covered bacon available for sale on Marini’s website, so I gave the store a call just to make sure it wasn’t a hoax. Still selling chocolate-covered bacon?Yes, we are. Why can’t I order it via your website? They only have selected items on the website, and the bacon is kind of new. We’ve only had it for a month or two. How does it taste? Is it as good as it looks? I don’t know. I don’t eat red meat. But it’s not red. It’s brown. True. But it’s really kind of a guy’s chocolate. Like a stunt chocolate? Yes. Do you sell a lot of it? Yes, it’s selling pretty good. |

Those Iranian weapons plaguing us in Iraq, ah, might not be Iranian after all. These folks are counting the number of times those pesky Iranians have made the news negatively on this one.
This is the best motorcycle crash of ALL TIME. No one gets hurt, if that helps anything.
Does money make you happier?, from Freakanomics. Well, it seems to make you more content in your lot in life, linearly against a logarithmic amount of cash. Also, that means that every dollar given up by someone in America brings sixty times as much happiness to someone in Burundi.
Again with that 60-to-1, may I again suggest Kiva.org? If you're interested in joining, let me know, and I'll email an invite. It's a minimum of a $25 donation, but by the above numbers, that's giving someone $1500 worth of help, and you get the $25 back at the end of that loan. |

vesperiffic! and massive! This weekend's Volti concert is not, in fact, the end of the season for me. I am also singing with AVE once again for a fringe concert during the Berkeley Festival & Exhibition. The piece is the Monteverdi Vespers, one of the big masterpieces of polyphony, and I've never sung it before. This group consists of top-notch professionals, plus a handful of neophytes such as myself, and it should be hella tight.
After that, I'm going to be singing the Striggio Missa sopra Ecco sì beato giorno, a recently unearthed Mass setting for 40 and 60 voices. This is not only the American premiere of this piece, but also its second performance in the last several centuries. There is some evidence that Tallis' celebrated Spem in alium was composed in response to this piece: In Queene Elizabeths time there was a songe sent into England of 30 parts (whence the Italians obteyned the name to be called the Apices of the world) which beeinge songe mad[e] a heavenly Harmony. The Duke of — bearing a great love to Musicke asked whether none of our English men could sett as good a songe, & Tallice beinge very skillfull was felt to try whether he would undertake the Matter, which he did and mad[e] one of 40 p[ar]ts which was songe in the longe gallery at Arundell house which so farre surpassed the other th[a]t the Duke hearinge of the songe tooke his chayne of gold from of his necke & putt yt about Tallice his necke & gave yt him. At any rate, the lengthy roster for this extravaganza includes singers from Magnificat, Philharmonia Chorale, American Bach Soloists, Schola Cantorum San Francisco, and also Perfect Fifth! Which is how I got invited to sing it. Booyah! Monteverdi: Monday June 2nd at 8 p.m. St. Mark's Episcopal Church 2300 Bancroft Way, Berkeley CA 94704 Striggio: Saturday June 7th at 8 p.m. Sunday June 8th at 7 p.m. First Congregational Church of Berkeley 2345 Channing Way, Berkeley, CA 94704 P.S. The "I sing high!" icon is in fact completely inappropriate for this post, as I have been recruited as a bass for both concerts. |
